What an AI chatbot costs in the UK, properly costed

Build, integration, conversation volume and the human who picks up the escalations. With the numbers most quotes leave out.

An AI chatbot in the UK can mean two very different products, and the price gap between them is the whole story. A scripted widget that answers twelve common questions is a small job. An agent connected to live order, stock or CRM data, that can act on a customer request and hand off cleanly to a person, is a proper integration project.

The three tiers, and what separates them

  • Scripted FAQ widget

Answers from a fixed list of questions you wrote. No connection to your systems. Cheap, quick, and it will annoy anyone who asks something slightly different. Fine for opening hours and directions.

  • Retrieval over your content

Reads your documents, policies or site and answers from them. Better, and genuinely useful for support deflection. Still cannot tell a customer where their order is, because it does not know.

  • Agent connected to live systems

Looks up the actual order, the actual stock level, the actual booking. Can act, within limits you set, and hand off to a human with the full conversation attached. This is where cost sits, because this is where the integration work is.

What drives the number

Not the chat interface, which is close to commodity. The cost is in the systems behind it: how many you connect to, whether they have usable APIs, and how carefully the handoff to a human has to work. A chatbot that cannot escalate properly costs you customers, so the escalation path is not the place to economise.

Channel matters too. Web chat is straightforward. WhatsApp requires the Business Cloud API and a verified sender. Phone agents add speech handling and a much lower tolerance for latency.

The question to ask before you buy one

Write down the twelve questions your team answers most often. If most of them require looking something up in a system, you need an agent and a scripted widget will disappoint you. If most are static policy answers, you may not need AI at all, and a better help page will outperform a chatbot.

We build the connected kind: AI agents and chatbots, on web, WhatsApp and phone.

Questions we get asked

How much does a UK chatbot cost?

It depends almost entirely on whether it connects to your systems. A scripted widget is a small fixed job. A connected agent is an integration project priced by the systems it touches and how the handoff has to behave.

Can it use WhatsApp?

Yes, through the WhatsApp Business Cloud API with a verified sender. For a lot of UK trade and retail customers that is the channel they actually use, and it usually outperforms web chat.

What stops it saying something wrong?

Constraining what it can answer from, giving it real data rather than letting it guess, and setting a confidence threshold below which it hands to a person. An agent that never escalates is a liability, not a feature.

Do we still need people answering questions?

Yes, fewer of them and for harder questions. The aim is removing the same twelve conversations that fill the inbox, not removing the team.
